Workers at the Aurora Reservoir Water Purification Facility (ARWPF)began receiving a special delivery January 15 as a convoy of semis began arriving at the site with ultraviolet disinfection generators and associated equipment for the new treatment plant. Deliveries concluded by January 20th, marking a significant milestone for the project as a major component for the facility’s water treatment is now at the site. About 14 semis loaded with the approximately 14-foot long shiny tubes were carefully driven to an unloading area where workers hoisted the nearly 4,000 pound units into the UV building. Now that the equipment is onsite and unloaded, work to finish the ultraviolet disinfection building will continue and workers can begin equipment installation.

Ultraviolet disinfection is an important part of Aurora Water’s multiple-step water purification process for the Prairie Waters Project—Aurora Water’s project to help drought harden the water system through bringing the city’s existing South Platte River water resources online by 2010. UV is the most powerful disinfection processes available for water treatment. Once operational, high intensity ultraviolet rays will destroy unwanted contaminants, including trace amounts of chemical, viruses and other compounds. The generators are like an industrial sized version of the process used to sterilize medical instruments.

Work at the ARWPF is more than 63 percent complete. Overall, the project—which includes the North Campus for natural purification, three pump stations, 34-miles of pipeline, and the ARWPF—is now 43 percent complete with construction.
