Project
Aurora will withdraw its existing water rights from riverbank wells along
the South Platte River just north of Brighton.
Capacity
Once complete in late 2010, the Prairie Waters Project will increase Aurora’s
water supply by 20 percent; delivering up to 10 thousand acre-feet (about
3.3 billion gallons) of water per year. An acre-foot is 325,861 gallons,
or enough water to supply two families of 4 for one year.
Purification
The project’s water is initially purified naturally through a unique
riverbank filtration process. Then the water travels to a new state-of-the-art
purification facility near the Aurora Reservoir.
